#292: A Suit to Suit Me?

I need a suit.  I should have bought a new suit years ago, since my only suit is from 1993.  One of the problems is, a real suit costs about $800.  I would like to spend about $100.  My plan is not working.

My daughter is in a musical and wanted to get a good part.  They’re doing Mary Poppins.  She said she wants to play the dog.  There is no dog in Mary Poppins.  Don’t worry, they gave her a good role…

  1. You really don’t need a “suit”, what you need is a good fitting sports coat, and a nice pair of slacks that match. Kohls has separates you can buy, go try some on, you might get lucky on sizing. In addition, they often run fabulous sales, so you won’t need to pay retail… it should be well under 800 for the pair, although you might not get down to the 100.00 price range. Good luck! I’m saving the listening part of the show until Monday.

  2. Ahh, a man after my own heart! Your expectations for clothing prices are exactly the same as mine. As far as I am concerned a dress shirt made of 100% cotton should cost $10. However Gerard is always pointing out that I have never made a shirt and that $10 is simply an unfair price. I didn’t say it was fair, I said that was what I wanted to pay.

  3. I fear Dan that you are like me – you just CAN’T spend that kind of money for clothing. I can’t even pick up expensive clothes up and walk around like I intend to buy them. I have friend who have lots of expensive shoes. What?! I think the most expensive item I own is a Vera Bradley backpack purse that I use EVERY day – and it was a present. I just can’t qualify spending that kind of money on my wardrobe. I like to dress nice but have found other places to get clothing for less.

I just had to buy a new ac unit. Here is the south it was over 100. Gotta have it – but boy the expense was great. I have an older house too. Have to put money into it even if we are underwater. The American Dream? I think not. More like The American Nightmare.

I am sorry to hear about Gene. You have been very lucky to have a special neighbor.

Thanks to you for the podcast. I listen when I work and when I grocery shop – two things I hate. Once again I need a new Pillbox cause when my computer died I lost some of my favorite episodes. Can you re-release the one where you daughter is getting samples in the grocery store and is running in the flipflops. I MISS IT. Makes me laugh every time!!

  4. So you’re looking for a disposable suit eh? You could either go to a thrift store and get a used suit for under $20 or buy a suit a Kohl’s and sew on better buttons. LOL

  5. Just checking in. Hope everything is ok. I assume since there has been a lull in the show the outlook for Gene has take a turn for the worse . . .

  6. Hey Dan, as confirmed Mary Poppins fans here, we can tell you there IS a dog in it. He is called Andrew. Amazing that your daughter (one year older than mine) got that role. I would be in tears! Kind of disagree with you about the song “Feed The Birds” though, I think it is OK. I know what you mean about DVD though, I can see how it would be annoying, but you know what, we love this movie so much here in the UK, we don’t actually mind about his accent. I think it offends Americans more. I would add though that Hugh Lawrie seems to have managed quite well the other way!

DVD was great too in what I think is just as good a movie – Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. LOVE that movie!

Re: the suit, $800 sounds absolutely crazy, but you are in LA I suppose. You know they make these suits for pennies don’t you, even Boss and Tommy H. Here I would be able to get a pretty OK suit for about $400 I think.

Sorry to hear about Gene. It was a really nice thing you did for him with the kids. Had me choking up. Great life lesson for them.
