Great offer on “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” in USA Today
I don’t know if most podcasters know or not, but Blogger & Podcaster magazine has a deal going with USA Today and USAToday.com to print/publish the “Blogger & Podcaster Guide,” a directory of…well, you can guess. I have NOT seen what the guide will actually look like, but it appears that USA Today (the only newspaper left that’s making money) is getting behind podcasting (FINALLY!) in a big way, and I think this is a chance for us to get a little mainstream exposure (FINALLY).
Of course, this is a money making venture for B&P, so being in the guide day after day and week after week isn’t free, BUT, Larry Genkin (publisher of B&P) has made a deal with a hand full of companies and podcasters (yours truly included) to offer an EXCELLENT DEAL on trying out the guide:
ONE MONTH, ON-LINE, FREE.
After that, 20% OFF THE ON-LINE PRICE.
And, 25% OFF THE PRINT PRICE.
Since I am a cheap, cheap little man, my thinking is that there’s nothing to lose in taking the free intro month. There is NO OBLIGATION.
This is a great situation. I’m frankly honored that Larry has asked me to pass this along, and I will stand by it completely. If you have any questions, write me directly and I will get you the answer ASAP (pill-at-dan klass dot com) .
Here are the details:
Beginning November 5, 2007 USA TODAY is launching “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” (think TV Guide for blogs and podcasts). “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” will run on both the home page of USATODAY.com every single day (10,400,000 unique visitors daily) and in the print edition of USA TODAY 1x per week (an additional 5,200,000 readers). I believe that listing your content in USA TODAY’s “Blogger & Podcaster Guide” is soon going to be a recognized must for anyone serious about building an audience for their blog/podcast. I’m excited to announce my relatively exclusive partnership agreement with “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide.” This partnership offers three significant benefits to our fellow podcasters:
1) You will be included in the launch of USA TODAY.com’s “Blogger & Podcaster Guide” free of charge for the entire 1st month (Reg. $49.95 per month).
2) If, after the first month, you want to continue promoting your blog or podcast in “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” (there’s no obligation whatsoever. You can take the free month promotion to over 10 million per day and run) all current “Friends of Dan” will receive a special 20% discount off the regular rates (you’ll pay only $39.95 per month…and can cancel at any time).
3) The USA TODAY’s print edition of “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” costs $195 per week. However “Friends of Dan” will save 25% (you pay only $145.)
THE HOW-TO:
1) Go to www.bloggerandpodcaster.com/usatoday
2) Select “New User” and go through 6 Step registration process
3) In “Step 2” be sure to enter ‘DKLASS’ in Coupon Code box under Option #4. Then click “Option #4”. If you don’t enter this code, you’re going to be charge the regular price (gulp).
Information they should have handy to register is:
- Blog/Podcast Name
- Website URL
- Brief Description (Print only): You can have 75 characters total — including spaces & punctuation – between your URL and description
- Detailed Description (400 characters max – including spaces & punctuation – for online guide)
- RSS Feed
- iTunes Feed (Podcasts only – Not mandatory): For info go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html
- Up to 10 Keywords related to your blog/podcasts (Not mandatory): Used for search and placements as relevant material on USATODAY.com
- Logo/Album Art (Not Mandatory)
The guide launches next Wednesday on November 7th, so if you want to be in for the launch you’ll need to enter your registration asap. It only takes 5 minutes if you have the above information prepared in advance.
You will receive a free month in the online guide (value $49.95) and if you choose to continue after the trial you’ll save 20% on the online guide or 25% on the print edition guide.
I’ll see you there!

Dan,
Thanks for the kind words and enthusiasm for the USA TODAY project. I know there’s money associated with this program, but it’s important for the industry to recognize and appreciate that the USA TODAY is opening their massive audience to bloggers/podcasters at a fraction of the price they typically charge. For example, the smallest classified ad you could run 1x in their print edition costs $268 (or $324 on Fridays)…and for usatoday.com, where our guide is both on the front page and embedded within relevant content, it would cost thousands of dollars just to get started. Being able to access this audience for under $50 per month (with unlimited click-throughs and trackable results) is a tremendous value for us and a big risk for USA TODAY. They’re hoping (like I am) that a critical mass of serious bloggers/podcasters will support this effort and with volume they’ll be able to do even more to get behind the industry. Print ad revenue is in decline and this is a way for them to shrewdly open up a new revenue stream.

It’s an advertisement, then, like classified ads. I don’t know if it helps podcasters that a list of random, not-editorially-chosen podcasts are going to show up in USA Today. Please try to at least provide some podcasts that it’s clear have been chosen because of their quality–that will provide value both to readers and to the podcasters who are advertising next to those editorially chosen podcasts.

Great suggestion. I’ll pass it on. I don’t know how the “guide” is going to be set up, and if it will include any level of editorial or not. Seems like that would be a great way to add some credibility to the guide beyond the straight listings, and would undoubtedly add to the likelihood of it getting read/browsed.

Where is the guide? Seems nonexist on usatoday today the 7th? I’m beginning to wonder if it is real or not.
November 7th, 2007 at 1:11 pm
Yeah, where is the guide that USA Today is “taking a big risk” on? I don’t see it anywhere on USAToday, much less featured on the front page. (And is Larry Gnkin just talking about a link on the home page, or what exactly?)
I did go the magazine’s web site and I see its Blogger & Podcaster Guide: http://www.bloggerandpodcaster.com/guide.php. From the looks of it, they’re giving away free classified ads and they’ve managed to get a whole 250 to list themselves, and this magazine’s been around since the spring 2007?
And will the classified ads be going on this not very impressive page, or something like it? There’s lots of talk of “contextual ads”, but will the advertisers themselves have permanent spots at usatoday.com that someone can click to? (not talking about a link to the guide) If so, will the advertiser get any search engine credit for the ads, or is that something that’s just being implied?

Where exactly is this appearing on USAToday.com? I don’t find it anywhere.

The Blogger & Podcaster Guide launched in the print edition of the USA TODAY on Wed. 11/7 and went live on www.usatoday.com during the afternoon of 11/8. To see it (keep in mind we’re still in Alpha release) go to www.usatoday.com … then go to the bottom of the page where it says “Marketplace” and you’ll see The Blogger & Podcaster Guide logo and drop down menu. Click the category you’re interested in and it will connect you into the guide. If you have any questions feel free to email me at lgenkin[at]larstan [dot]net.
