One-Click iTunes subscription
For a while there, the “one-click iTunes subscription” was a thing of lore, the Holy Grail of podcast coding. I poked around a while and quickly forgot about it, happy enough with offering a link to take people straight to my show’s page within iTunes.
Well, this morning I took a closer look at Apple’s iWeb, and discovered how simple it is to set up a link that will automatically subscripe someone to your show in iTunes.
Simply create a link that directs people to your feed, but instead of starting the address with “http” you start it with “itpc.” (ex: itpc://www.danklass.com/pill/pill.xml) That’s it. When a surfer clicks the link, iTunes opens up, they are subscribed to your show, and the latest episode begins to download. Nice.
Try it. I dare you ![]()

[…] That’s a one-click iTunes subscription button. If you click on it, it will open iTunes, subscribe you to The Jason Crane Show, and start downloading the most recent show. Cool, huh? (Thanks to Dan Klass for the tip!) […]

iWeb rox.
(does anyone else find it ironic that the code they’ve chosen for this nifty lil number is “IT-PC?”)

Dunno if anyone’s still listening, but Apple says this isn’t the best thing to do if you want your show to climb the iTunes charts:
“Also note that this method will not push your podcast up the various charts in the iTunes Store. It is a direct call to the user’s iTunes client software and sends no information to the iTunes Store. If you want to increase the visibility of your podcast, we recommend that your web site and other marketing materials use the iTunes Store link described above.”
