Web Pages Kills Spam (Film at 11)

March 14th, 2008

This link kills spam

The folks at officeofstrategicinfluence.com claim they’ve set up a web page that’ll kill spam. By sending e-mail address phishing bots to a seemingly never ending list of useless addresses, the hope is that the resulting list would be so useless that it would be thrown out buy the spammers (and your real e-mail address along with it).

Does it work? I don’t care. It’s worth a try. When you know as little about actual code as I do, but someone makes a claim like this that actually makes sense, and that someone is not asking me for my money, I’m in.

PS: Oh, drat!  Two seconds after posting this, fellow Twitter-aholic Maggie McFee tankgrrl  replied:  It’ll work about 1 day, until the spammer says “Oh, clever” and adds ‘do not crawl officeofstrategicinfluence.com’ to their bot.

FCC to save the internet?

February 25th, 2008

U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin said today that if broadband providers try to unreasonably interfer with internet users’ access to content, he is “ready, willing, and able” to stop them.

Could the internet actually be saved by the FCC? Man, I hope so.

Podcast Fiction hits the big time…

February 19th, 2008

Blogger & PodcasterI recently wrote a cover story for Blogger & Podcaster about Scott Sigler and J.C. Hutchins and their upcoming book releases. In case you don’t know (who are you?), Sigler signed a multi-book deal with Crown Books who will release his brilliant goo-fest “Infected” on April 1st, and Hutchins has two books coming out this year for St. Martins Press: an as-yet-to-be-disclosed book-for-hire (wow, that’s a lot of dashes) and his international clone thriller, 7th Son. Also featured in the article (as the next breakout writer) is pod-fic icon Mur Lafferty, in praise of her super(anti)hero tale, “Playing for Keeps.”

Well, the issue hit the net today. You can check it out at the Blogger & Podcaster website now. I’m very proud of the piece, apparently J.C. is happy (click here to see J.C. blog post on the article), and I hope to write more for the mag (I’m a big fan and supporter of B&P). Check it out. I hope it inspires you to check out the works of one of these great writers, or one of their fellow writers of podcast fiction.

Great offer on “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” in USA Today

November 2nd, 2007

USA TodayB&P Guide

I don’t know if most podcasters know or not, but Blogger & Podcaster magazine has a deal going with USA Today and USAToday.com to print/publish the “Blogger & Podcaster Guide,” a directory of…well, you can guess. I have NOT seen what the guide will actually look like, but it appears that USA Today (the only newspaper left that’s making money) is getting behind podcasting (FINALLY!) in a big way, and I think this is a chance for us to get a little mainstream exposure (FINALLY).

Of course, this is a money making venture for B&P, so being in the guide day after day and week after week isn’t free, BUT, Larry Genkin (publisher of B&P) has made a deal with a hand full of companies and podcasters (yours truly included) to offer an EXCELLENT DEAL on trying out the guide:

ONE MONTH, ON-LINE, FREE.
After that, 20% OFF THE ON-LINE PRICE.
And, 25% OFF THE PRINT PRICE.

Since I am a cheap, cheap little man, my thinking is that there’s nothing to lose in taking the free intro month. There is NO OBLIGATION.

This is a great situation. I’m frankly honored that Larry has asked me to pass this along, and I will stand by it completely. If you have any questions, write me directly and I will get you the answer ASAP (pill-at-dan klass dot com) .

Here are the details:

Beginning November 5, 2007 USA TODAY is launching “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” (think TV Guide for blogs and podcasts). “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” will run on both the home page of USATODAY.com every single day (10,400,000 unique visitors daily) and in the print edition of USA TODAY 1x per week (an additional 5,200,000 readers). I believe that listing your content in USA TODAY’s “Blogger & Podcaster Guide” is soon going to be a recognized must for anyone serious about building an audience for their blog/podcast. I’m excited to announce my relatively exclusive partnership agreement with “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide.” This partnership offers three significant benefits to our fellow podcasters:

1) You will be included in the launch of USA TODAY.com’s “Blogger & Podcaster Guide” free of charge for the entire 1st month (Reg. $49.95 per month).

2) If, after the first month, you want to continue promoting your blog or podcast in “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” (there’s no obligation whatsoever. You can take the free month promotion to over 10 million per day and run) all current “Friends of Dan” will receive a special 20% discount off the regular rates (you’ll pay only $39.95 per month…and can cancel at any time).

3) The USA TODAY’s print edition of “The Blogger & Podcaster Guide” costs $195 per week. However “Friends of Dan” will save 25% (you pay only $145.)

THE HOW-TO:

1) Go to www.bloggerandpodcaster.com/usatoday
2) Select “New User” and go through 6 Step registration process
3) In “Step 2” be sure to enter ‘DKLASS’ in Coupon Code box under Option #4. Then click “Option #4”. If you don’t enter this code, you’re going to be charge the regular price (gulp).

Information they should have handy to register is:
- Blog/Podcast Name
- Website URL
- Brief Description (Print only): You can have 75 characters total — including spaces & punctuation – between your URL and description
- Detailed Description (400 characters max – including spaces & punctuation – for online guide)
- RSS Feed
- iTunes Feed (Podcasts only – Not mandatory): For info go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/podcaststechspecs.html
- Up to 10 Keywords related to your blog/podcasts (Not mandatory): Used for search and placements as relevant material on USATODAY.com
- Logo/Album Art (Not Mandatory)

The guide launches next Wednesday on November 7th, so if you want to be in for the launch you’ll need to enter your registration asap. It only takes 5 minutes if you have the above information prepared in advance.

You will receive a free month in the online guide (value $49.95) and if you choose to continue after the trial you’ll save 20% on the online guide or 25% on the print edition guide.

I’ll see you there!
